Expensive Fuzz: Why Positioning Comes Before Ads

Marketing multiplies whatever message you give it. A fuzzy message multiplied is just expensive fuzz — and it’s the silent killer of founder ad budgets.

The one-breath test

You need a sentence a stranger could repeat at dinner: who it’s for, the expensive problem it fixes, and why you over what they do today. “We help Hudson Valley service businesses stop losing jobs to slow follow-up” passes. “We’re a full-service solutions platform” is a shrug in sentence form.

Mine the words, don’t invent them

The highest-converting copy is quoted, not composed. In every early customer conversation, capture the exact phrases people use for the problem. Ten conversations produce more usable copy than a month of brainstorming.

Test before you spend

Pitch the sentence to ten real prospects and watch behavior, not politeness. Leaning in, asking “how much?”, asking “how fast can you start?” — signal. Polite nodding — noise. Only pour budget behind a sentence that reliably produces signal.
